I am very pleased that the UK Chess
Challenge is continuing to expand and that 2,000 schools now take
part in it. Children learn by engaging in a variety of activities,
not just those traditionally taught in the classroom. I firmly
believe that participation in chess can provide innovative ways
of raising levels of motivation and achievement among school pupils.
Chess can be particularly effective in developing logic and strategy
skills, as well as encouraging a healthy sense of competitiveness
through tournaments and friendly matches. I would like to see
as many young people as possible given the opportunity to learn
through chess, regardless of their age or background. |
