CHESS TOUR KICKS OFF AT COGGESHALL

            The first encounter in the Sabrina Chevannes Chess Tour took place at Honywood Community Science College in Coggeshall, Essex, on Wednesday, 20th February, 2008.

Fifteen young players, 14 boys and 1 girl, assembled in a circle around Sabrina at 1 o’clock in the afternoon in the school library.  Sabrina went calmly from board to board and soon notched up her first win when the opponent unwisely weakened his king defences:

1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 b6 3 Bc4 Nc6 4 Nf3 f6 5 Nh4 g5?? 6 Qh5+ Ke7 7 Nf5++

A spectacular beginning to the display, but thereafter the wins were harder to find and by the time the bell went at 3 pm, Sabrina had won altogether 7 games by checkmate.  The remaining games were decided on points, which gave Sabrina a total of 13 wins.

Two Honywood players earned well-deserved draws: Brett Maynard-Smith and Matthew Rose, Brett having only a slight disadvantage after repulsing Sabrina’s early attack.  The best game was judged by Sabrina to have been played by Adam Clark, who played imaginatively and aggressively and only narrowly lost on adjudication.
