THE BRITISH LAND CHESS CHALLENGE

GIGAFINAL

QUALIFICATION

Qualification for the 3rd stage of the Chess Challenge, the

Northern or Southern Gigafinal is as follows:-

(a) winning the title of Supremo or Suprema in any of the 24

sections from U7 to U18.

(b) scoring 4 points out of 6 in your section of the Megafinal

(Please note that players scoring the same points as a

Supremo or Suprema but failing to win the title on tie break,

only qualify if they have scored at least 4 points out of 6.)

SUPREMO/SUPREMA TITLES

There can only be one Supremo or Suprema for each

section. Therefore, in the case of a tie, this will be broken

by calculating the SUM OF PROGRESSIVE SCORES.

Please note that Sum of Opponents’ scores are NOT used

in this tournament. If there is still a tie after calculating Sum

of Progressive Scores, then the tie will be broken by a game

with 10 minutes each on the clock for both players. If this

game is drawn, there will be a game with 5 minutes each on

the clock. If this is drawn, the matter will be decided by lot.

N.B. Players playing "hors concours" must score 4 points or more to qualify since they cannot win titles.

Some FAQS (Frequently asked questions)

Q. If the Supremo or the Suprema is the only entrant for their section, or

scores very few points, for example 0, does he or she still get the title?

A. If such a player is competing in the tournament and is, perhaps, the only

entrant, then they are undoubtedly a pioneer and should be rewarded even if

they lose all their games. Furthermore, by playing in the tournament, they will

also have learned a great deal from their losses and will have shown fighting

spirit by not withdrawing after a series of unfavourable results. So the answer

is YES!

Q HOW DO I GET MY ENTRY FORM FOR

THE GIGAFINAL?

A. If you qualify for a place in the Southern or Northern Gigafinal, you will

receive your Gigafinal entry form in the post during late May or

early June. There will be an entry fee of £12.

It is important that you have filled in your address on the Megafinal entry form

correctly to ensure that your Gigafinal entry form will reach you safely (if you

qualify). We need name, address, school/club, telephone number, date

of birth, sex on the Megafinal entry form. If your entry form hasn’t

arrived by mid June, email ukchesschallenge@aol.com (or telephone

07715 041320) and we will send you a replacement.

Qualifying for the Gigafinal doesn’t mean that you are entered

for it – you will still have to fill in the entry form and pay the £12

entry fee!
